Go Fightin' Stem Cells!

Well, time for another update. It has been about four weeks since my last chemo and I feel pretty good. And I have been making good use of this bonus time. On Friday night, Amy and I had a meeting down at her house for Women's Group. I played bartender. (I may not be able to drink, doesn't mean I cant mix) Then we watched the Devil wears Prada. Very funny movie.
On Saturday, I went to a friends birthday party in the city. Actually it was on a boat around the city. I wasn't quite sure how my stomache was going to like that, but a compazine helped it.
On Sunday, I did the usual. Taught Sunday School, sang in choir, and then mom had lunch back at the house for Kat, Chuck, Erica and Drew. (Did I forget to mention that Erica and Drew were in for the party?)
However, the best time was yesterday. Monday.
I went to go see the Daily Show. I'm still grinning.
I love the Daily Show. And I now have my parents hooked on it as well. Several months ago, my mom sent away for tickets. Then I relapsed and we were afraid I wouldn't be able to go. However, Dr. Ahmed is a fan and Denise was warned a month ago that I had to be well enough to go.
We got into the city at around three, and mom brought a folding chair along so that I could sit while we waited in line. At some point mom cornered a security guard and asked him about possibly getting me and maybe chuck, seats up front. I would have killed her for asking, but in the end it turned out great. So I guess I owe her a thank you.
A little while later, we met Teri Abrams, the audience manager, who pulled us off the line. Since I still had no idea what mom had said to the security guard, I thought that we might be getting kicked out. (hey - with mom you never know. she is just as likely to piss someone off.) To our surprise Teri took us inside and into the staff lounge. All five of us were told to make ourselves at home. We sat on the couch and mom helped her self to some fruit salad. I snapped a picture of her eating the fruit salad to send to erica with the caption "mom eating jon stewarts fruit salad." I'm not sure erica ever got the picture, because I was trying to figure out how to work my new camera phone, Jon Stewart walked through the room and into the studio. I nearly choked on the chocolate/cheesecake thing that I was eating. Exciting stuff right? But wait. it gets better.
We watched the rehersal run through on the tv in the lounge, which was just as cool as watching the show itself. Then Teri came back in and after a few minutes of chatting and getting some of my information, walked us into the studio. Not through a normal audience door. No. Through the set. Once again. So very, very cool.
She got us set in our seats and told us that there may be a chance that Jon Stewart would come over and say hi. That is about when the perma grin started. In all honesty, I was thrilled just to have seen him walk by. The show was great and funny as hell. (You could watch the videos at Comedy Central if you want. ) After the show, when the audience started to file out, Teri motioned for us to stay seated. She talked with us for a few minutes, and gave me the blue papers that Jon doodles on during the show. I was trying to stay calm, I really was. ...and then Jon Stewart came out.
There are no words. All I kept thinking was, don't say something stupid and make a fool of yourself. I don't think I did. Maybe a little but what do you expect. I was a little star struck.
He spent a good ten minutes talking with us. And even autographed the sheet for me. ( "Go Fightin' Stem Cells!" is his phrase the autograph) We then took pictures with me in the chair. That's what's posted. I ...I am so very very happy. over 24 hours later and I still have perma grin. It was a great day and everyone was so down to earth and nice. It was just a perfect day. I'm sure there is more that I am forgetting but I am a little tired. So, I'm going to bed now.
I'll update again later in the week.
-Elizabeth

Wow. That is way, way cool! When I first saw the picture, I thought it was one of those photo magic tricks or something. But it was the real deal. And the "Go Fightin' Stem Cells" is a great line. I've got a smile on my face, too, reading all about it.

Okay, I haven't gone past the picture, so I don't know what your blog says yet, but I'm impressed! How cool is that! Love the pic! I'll have to read on after I get the kids to bed, no time for myself when they have homework, etc.
You look fantastic, too!

Elizabeth was indeed star-struck. Now Jon was really understanding, but lest you forget, Elizabeth, "meeting you [Jon Stewart] is the best part about having chemo" did escape your lips...three (count 'em) THREE times. I'm sure he took it as a compliment.

It was way cool. Even if he did shake my hand suspiciously upon learning my name...I suppose it's not every day you meet a Katrina that isn't a natural disaster (insert favorite joke here; I can take it).

Up until seeing you at choir last night my excitement for the week was watching my amarylis grow..which is more exciting than it sounds, they grow so fast. But seeing your still contagious excitement about your Jon Stewart adventure was the best and now Kristin and I have perma grins from your sharing your joy. And the picture of you all is fantastic. You continue to inspire us!

I must say, I am a little jealous of your Jon Stewart Experience. Love him! Your story brought back college memories of watching Daily Show reruns in the wee hours of the morning. I'm glad you had such a good time, the picture is fabulous, and his autograph line should be your mantra from now on.
Love & Hugs

Hey Liz,

The smile on your face tells it all. Keep that in mind as you go through this week. Hopefull this time next week the IC (intense chemo) will be behind you, as you move to the next phase.

We are worth you Liz!

p.s. Think what you mom could have done if we took her with us to Bon Jovie - oh, the possibilities!

I mis-quoted so the situational humor is failing...(those who know me, know this occurs often).

Elizabeth actually said, "Meeting you [Jon Stewart] is best thing since chemo!"

See? Get it?

As though chemo had been a thrilling, once-in-a-life-time experience, which Jon Stewart should be thankful he surpassed.

Now, that's funny.

Ok, Katrina....I thinks you explain too much. We get the picture.

Now, of course there was my star struck comment. I told Jon (we're on a first named basis), that Elizabeth was of all our children, his biggest fan...and how she had brought news of the show home from college and now she had her dad and I hooked. I followed this by saying something like, "of course when I told my friends that we were coming to see you, their response was Jon WHO?" NOw I can't believe I said that.
However I love the accolades from all of you who left comments (except Lucy from Slovakia who says I have a big mouth and it's always open?? I guess her English isn't as good as we thought) however, fame is short and two days later, Elizabeth had me on her dog doo list again. Alas, the fate of a mother.

Wait just a dog-gone minute! It took a visit with Jon Stewart to get you to write after 10 days absence, when all of your "fans" have been writing right along? (I know...I didn't write. I love you to death, but it takes me eons to formulate a letter. Besides, I see you in choir and give you a hug and a nudge, even after you laughed at me at the communion rail because I made an itsy-bitsy faux-pas and forgot to take a glass and had to go back! Geez...anyway, I wrote a lot of things, just didn't post them. Weird.) SO...How awesome was it to meet Jon Stewart!!? That wasn't a question...it was an exclamation point. A notice to Fred...we have big guns shooting you down now, so take notice! (Actually, there are no bigger guns than God, love and family, but Jon Stewart is pretty big!) I know, shut up Linda! I love you, Elizabeth!

Good luck today Elizabeth. Keep your spirits up and know that we are all with you during your mobilization...is that similar to an escalation...or an enhancement?!

Go fightin' stem cells!

PS Mom and Elizabeth: Be good to each other. You are each other's closest supports.

Hi, I am friend of Joe and Marge Wrobel anda big fan of Jon Stewart even though he made a comment one time that no one in Alabama watched his show. Wrong.

A woman I work with went to college with him and claims he was a jerk. I can't wait to send he this and see what she has to say.

That must have been so much fun. Glad your mom spoke up and got you special treatment.

Hope your medical treatments go as well.

Susan Spafford
